2013 Housing and Design Trends

Every year we go through trade magazines, research internet blogs and reflect on our own customer's wish lists to compile a list of trends for the upcoming year.  Here are some of the most influential design trends that we feel will have an impact on the home building market:

Healthy Home Living - Sustainable and "Green" design is here to stay and is becoming ever more prevalent, even in our local market.  Exposure through TV networks such as HGTV have also made consumers more aware of products and building techniques that can make homes better for their family and the environment.

This looks to be an exciting year for us as groundwork is being laid to start construction on a sustainable spec home of our own later this year!  Right now we are in the process of researching available lots, and hope to have more information soon!

Countertops - It appears as if granite has finally been dethroned as the number one countertop product.  In the past year alone we have installed other products such as corian solid-surface counters, carrara marble and even concrete countertops.  With more selections widely available consumers are choosing products other than granite that better fit their overall style.

Outdoors Spaces as Extension of House - We've seen this grow in popularity both locally and in trade magazines: homeowners want private outdoor spaces that seamlessly integrate with indoor spaces.  These spaces aren't just a 10 foot x 20 foot concrete patio, but rather well designed lush outdoor escapes that families can enjoy together or use to entertain groups.

Classic yet Contemporary - Across the board people of all generations are gravitating towards a design that is a cross between classic and contemporary.  Large interior spaces with rooms that flow into one another are favored over the traditional.  Clean, simple lines on both cabinets and trim packages are now more popular than the ornate, heavily detailed style of the past.

Color Trends - We referred to "The Voice of Color" as our source for the 2013 color trend.  They predict "all the coming trends have one thing in common – individual expression that is very well articulated.  Consumers are more at ease with color, mixing and matching, craving the complex patterns and color blocking.  Look for bright colors and unexpected places to use it!"

Kitchens - A couple of trends in kitchens have become very evident over the past year, with the first being mismatched cabinets.  Many homeowners and designers are choosing to create appealing styles by mixing and matching cabinet colors and textures.    Also popular is utilizing a large, deep single bowl kitchen sink instead of a sink with two bowls.  In this case many people choose to have a second work sink or bar sink to serve as overflow.

Small Homes That Live Big - As the housing and real estate market continue to gain momentum, the cost of building certainly won't be going down.  Also, the new generation of home buyers tend to be looking for well designed, compact homes packed with features rather than large track style homes that simply offer a lot of space. Spaces must be carefully arranged to reduce hallways, maximize functionality and create adaptable spaces that can be used in many different ways.

Well there you have it!  This list certainly isn't all encompassing, but rather just our observations on where the home building market is heading for the upcoming year.  Give us a call and check us out on Facebook, Houzz or at www.TerraNovaBuilds.com for more ideas!
