Having Some Fun :: Playground Renovation

We were recently contacted by our friends at Christ Memorial Child Care Center asking if we could help them with improvements to their playground.  Although we primarily do residential construction, we weren't going to turn down the opportunity to lend a hand!  So Terra Nova Construction has teamed up with Regency Landscaping Services to give their playground a facelift!

After listening to their needs, we developed a design which adds function and fun!  The goal was to increase the amount of shade on the playgrounds through a mixture of trees and pavilions.  The overall designed is aimed at creating a "backyard atmosphere" that allows children to play and explore on multiple surfaces.  This is achieved through the addition of rubber mats, a deck that functions as a stage, a sandbox and introducing grass areas inside the playground.

There are also several other unique concepts that will be included at a very low cost thanks to some creative thinking!  For example, tree stumps will be painted by the kids and then installed to create a "stump walk."  This walk will also function as seating when the deck is being used as a stage or outdoor classroom.  Regency Landscape Services will be bringing in discarded rubber loader tracks from commercial equipment to create an outdoor garden for the kids.  These tracks will be partially buried, and then filled with a garden soil mix.  A rainwater barrel attached to pavilion will collect water for this fun, and sustainable, outdoor garden!  Finally music walls will be created through a mix of salvaged and store bought materials.

All of these elements come together in an effort to promote creativity, exploration and fun for the children.  It has been great working with the parents and staff so far, as their dreams have pulled this project together.  Look forward to more updates as this project gets underway, with construction expected to start soon!
